The Bay of Kotor is where most international weddings in Montenegro take place. Mountains drop straight into the water, stone towns line the shore, and the whole bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
What photographs don’t show is how differently each part of the bay works for a wedding weekend. Perast is small and car-free along the waterfront. Kotor is busier and closer to the airport. Tivat, Herceg Novi and the Luštica Peninsula offer modern resorts with space for larger groups.
Perast is a single waterfront street of Baroque palaces facing two small islands, including Our Lady of the Rocks. Weddings here range from intimate dinners to celebrations of up to around 120 guests: a ceremony on a terrace by the water, dinner in a restored palace, guests staying in the village or nearby.
Parking is limited and the waterfront is pedestrian, so guest arrival needs planning.
The old town of Kotor is the best-known stop on the bay, which also makes it the busiest in summer, especially on cruise-ship days. Couples who want the setting without the crowds usually choose a waterfront hotel or villa a short drive away, along Dobrota, Prčanj or the Kostanjica side, or one of the restaurants and beach clubs around Kamenari.
The outer bay works differently. Porto Montenegro in Tivat, Portonovi near Herceg Novi and the Luštica Peninsula offer five-star resorts, marinas and space for larger guest lists, with accommodation, catering and a weather backup in one place.
Tivat Airport sits inside the bay, about 8 km from Kotor, with direct seasonal flights from most European cities — around 2.5 hours from the UK. Dubrovnik is a year-round alternative but adds a border crossing, which can take one to two hours in peak summer.
Roads around the bay are narrow and slow, so a 20-minute transfer can take 40. Group shuttles work better than individual taxis, and the Kamenari–Lepetane ferry shortens many routes between the two sides of the bay.
Late May, June and September are the most balanced months: warm days, long evenings and a calmer bay. In September the sea is still around 24–26°C. July and August bring peak heat, traffic and the highest demand. October still works well, with lower demand and softer light, though the risk of rain rises towards the end of the month.
Which part of the bay suits your guest count, dates and budget is what we establish in Venue Discovery.
Most weddings in the bay take place in Perast, along the waterfront around Kotor, in Tivat and Porto Montenegro, and on the Luštica Peninsula. Each has a different character and scale: heritage palaces in Perast, waterfront hotels around Kotor, and five-star resorts in the outer bay.
Yes. Weddings in Perast usually take place in restored palaces, boutique hotels and waterfront restaurants, for up to around 120 guests. A ceremony at Our Lady of the Rocks depends on church permission and boat logistics, so it needs to be confirmed early.
Tivat Airport is inside the bay, about 8 km from Kotor, with direct flights from most European cities in season. Dubrovnik and Podgorica airports operate year-round but mean longer transfers, and Dubrovnik adds a border crossing.
Private villas and palaces typically suit 20–50 guests, venues in Perast up to around 120, and the larger resorts in Tivat, Herceg Novi and Luštica 150–200 or more.
Kotor old town is busy in July and August, especially on cruise-ship days. Evenings in Perast and venues in the outer bay are calmer, and late May, June and September offer a quieter bay overall.
Only a civil ceremony at the municipal office is legally binding in Montenegro. A religious ceremony can follow it. Most international couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in the bay.
In Venue Discovery we typically review nine to eleven venues against your brief and narrow them to a shortlist of three to five, with logistics, Plan B and booking conditions side by side.
